Cartagena faces west over the Caribbean, which means the evening show is spectacular almost every day. Catching the sunset in Cartagena is a ritual for locals and travelers alike — here are seven of the best places to do it.
1. On the water: a romantic sunset boat tour
For the most memorable view, watch the sun drop from the deck of a boat. Cruising the bay at golden hour, you’ll see the skyline of Bocagrande, the old city walls and the sky turning orange and pink over the water. It’s a favorite for couples, honeymooners and proposals.
We recommend the Romantic Boat Tour by Botegena — an easy way to make an evening feel special.
2. The city walls
The ramparts around the Old Town are the classic sunset spot. Walk along the western walls facing the sea and find a place to sit, or settle in at one of the bars built into the fortifications for a drink with a view.
3. Rooftop bars in the Old Town and Getsemaní
Many boutique hotels open their rooftops to the public in the evening. You’ll get views over church domes, tiled roofs and the sea. Arrive a little early to grab a good seat — they fill up fast in high season.
4. Cerro de La Popa
The highest point in the city is crowned by a historic convent. From the top, you can see the whole city, the bay and the coastline stretching away in the evening light. Go by taxi or with a tour, and plan to come back down before it gets fully dark.
5. Castillo San Felipe de Barajas
The giant fortress offers sweeping views over the city. Visiting in the late afternoon means cooler temperatures and beautiful light on the stone walls. Check closing times so you don’t get caught out. Read our Castillo San Felipe guide before you go.
6. Bocagrande beach
For a laid-back sunset, walk down to the beach in Bocagrande. Locals gather along the sand and seafront as the sun dips into the sea.
7. A Rosario Islands overnight
If you stay the night on the islands or on Barú, you’ll get a sunset with nothing but sea on the horizon. See our guide to getting to the Rosario Islands.
