The best way to spend your first day in Cartagena is simple: put on comfortable shoes, grab a bottle of water and get lost inside the walls. The historic center is compact, flat and packed with color, so you can see the highlights in a single morning-to-sunset loop without booking a thing.

Here’s the route we give friends visiting for the first time.

1. Start at the Clock Tower (Torre del Reloj)

The yellow Clock Tower is the main gateway into the old city and the most natural starting point. Walk through the arches and you’re instantly in Plaza de los Coches, one of the city’s oldest squares. Just to the side is the Portal de los Dulces, a row of vendors selling traditional coconut and tamarind sweets — a great first taste of the Caribbean coast.

2. Plaza de la Aduana and Plaza San Pedro Claver

A short walk takes you to Plaza de la Aduana, the old customs square, and then to Plaza San Pedro Claver, home to the church and cloister named after the Jesuit priest who ministered to enslaved Africans arriving at the port. Look for the quirky metal sculptures of everyday Cartagena life scattered around the square.

3. Plaza de Bolívar and the Gold Museum

Head toward shady Plaza de Bolívar, the city’s green heart and a good place to rest under the trees. On the square you’ll find the Museo del Oro Zenú, a small gold museum run by Colombia’s central bank, and the Palace of the Inquisition, one of the most impressive colonial buildings in the city.

4. Wander the side streets

This is where Cartagena really wins you over. Leave the map behind for an hour and wander streets like Calle de la Factoría, Calle del Santísimo and the lanes around Plaza Santo Domingo. Flower-covered balconies, heavy wooden doors with ornate knockers and pastel facades are everywhere. Stop at Plaza Santo Domingo to see Fernando Botero’s famous reclining woman sculpture.

5. San Diego and Las Bóvedas

In the afternoon, drift north into the quieter San Diego neighborhood, a little more residential and full of small boutiques and cafés. Continue to Las Bóvedas, a row of vaulted rooms built into the walls that now house craft and souvenir shops.

6. Finish on the city walls at sunset

End your first day on top of the walls. The ramparts wrap around the old city, and walking along them as the light turns gold is one of the most memorable things to do in Cartagena. Pick a spot facing the sea, order a drink at one of the bars on the wall or simply sit and watch the sky change color.

Tips for your first day

  • Go early or late. Midday heat is intense — plan indoor stops (museums, churches, cafés) for early afternoon.
  • Carry cash in small bills for street snacks, fresh fruit and water.
  • Pace yourself. You’ll be back. Day one is for getting your bearings, not ticking every box.

Once you’ve explored the old city, it’s time to get out on the water or into the countryside. See our top picks for things to do in Cartagena for boat days, island tours, coffee tastings and adventure tours.
