Every street in the walled city has a story. If you love history, you can trace five centuries of Cartagena history in a single weekend — from colonial fortresses and the Inquisition to the siege that gave the city its proud nickname, La Heroica.

Day 1: The colonial city

Morning: Castillo San Felipe de Barajas

Start early at the city’s mightiest fortress, built and expanded by the Spanish to protect one of the empire’s most important ports. Explore the tunnels and learn about the 1741 battle against the British fleet. Our Castillo San Felipe guide has everything you need to know.

Afternoon: Palace of the Inquisition and Plaza de Bolívar

Cool off in the Old Town at the Palace of the Inquisition, whose museum covers the Holy Office’s history in the city along with broader colonial history. Then step across Plaza de Bolívar to the Museo del Oro Zenú to see the gold work of the Indigenous Zenú people who lived in this region long before the Spanish arrived.

Evening: The walls at sunset

Walk the city walls, the defensive ring that took generations to build. Watching the sunset from the ramparts, it’s easy to imagine lookouts scanning the horizon for pirate ships.

Day 2: Faith, freedom and heroism

Morning: San Pedro Claver

Visit the church and cloister of San Pedro Claver, the Jesuit priest remembered for ministering to enslaved Africans brought to Cartagena’s port. It’s a powerful reminder of the role the slave trade played in the city’s history.

Midday: Getsemaní

Walk to Getsemaní, the working-class neighborhood outside the walls whose residents played an important part in Cartagena’s 1811 declaration of independence from Spain. Many of today’s murals honor that legacy.

Evening: 105 Ciudad Heroica

End your weekend with 105 Ciudad Heroica, a live show that brings one of the city’s most dramatic chapters to the stage. In 1815, Spanish forces under Pablo Morillo laid siege to Cartagena for more than three months. The city’s residents held out through hunger and disease before it fell that December — a resistance that earned Cartagena the title Ciudad Heroica, the Heroic City. Find the show in our top picks.

Tips for history lovers

  • Hire a licensed guide for the castle and the Old Town — the stories make the stones come alive.
  • Check museum opening days; some close one day a week.
  • Plan indoor museum time for the hottest hours of the afternoon.
